Ayr Campus Development

RMJM were appointed to develop a campus masterplan for a joint education initiative between the University of West of Scotland and the Scottish Agricultural College at the Universities Craigie Campus in Ayr.

The Universities existing campus facilities had come to the end of their service life and the vision was developed to create a new riverside flagship campus to extend teaching for generations to come.

The new campus building includes facilities for the SAC and University of West of Scotland. The team worked with both Clients to create a co-location strategy that will achieve space efficiency while still maintaining distinct identities.

The landmark building complements the spectacular parkland and riverside setting by the creation of new 'living classrooms' and the use of materials sympathetic to the surroundings.

Set out over three floors, with a basement to the eastern end, the building is a calm and subtle backdrop to the activity within and the natural setting out with.

The project achieved a BREEAM 'Excellent' rating for both Design/Procurement and Post-Construction stages. A number of sustainability strategies were adopted to secure this rating, and the building has been assessed to achieve the highest score for any new build University Campus in Scotland.

I joined the team shortly after completing work on the NSO Skelmersdale and College project in April 2009 and saw the project through to completion in June 2011 with RMJM novated to Bovis Lend Lease. My involvement was wide ranging from delivery of an Energy Centre to the main building External and Internal Packages working with specialist subcontractors.
